I made a first arrangement of this song around New Year's of 2005. I don't remember why I chose this song, but one of my students had passed away in an accident and somehow, sitting down at the piano "Come Thou Fount" merged itself with "Canon in D." Raw lyrics with one of Pachabel's most beautiful works.
The arrangement stayed the same for many years until I was going to play it for an offertory and wanted to speak the name of Jesus more in my music that Sunday and added "I Have Decided to Follow Jesus." Which fit great with the honesty of "Come Thou Fount."
I have decided to follow Jesus - no turning back - but prone to wander, Lord.
It's told that the man who wrote "Come Thou Found" did wander... so I love how these two songs express a bit of reality in each.
As a musical aside, when I went to put the music into sheet music for recording purposes, I found it fit best in 4/2 and 3/2. I usually think in 4/4, 3/4, or 6/8, so it was sort of a fun surprise to discover that the song alternated between 4/2 and 3/2.
